Rotary PapanuiRotary Clubs around the world have been responding to local and international needs brought on by the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.  For Rotary Papanui in Christchurch, that meant cans, cans and more cans!
Sometimes the best thing to do is to help a helper, and that's exactly the approach taken by Rotary Papanui during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Salvation Army's foodbank had been inundated with over 50% more people requiring help to feed their families during lockdown. Stocks we really low so Rotary Papanui held a “Rotary Can” collection. A challenge was that it needed to be contactless.  Each member targeted houses in their own street or nearby. Cans of food were donated by local families and left by their letterboxes at a designated time and day for collection.
The club collected over 1500 cans and numerous other non perishable items for the Salvos, which were sanitised and delivered to the foodbank for onward distribution to those in need.
